ServSafe Manager

How long is the exam, and what score do I need to pass?

The exam consists of 90 questions and you need 75% correct to pass.

Is there a time limit for the exam?

Yes.  Examinees have up to 2 hours to complete the exam.

Is the exam open book/open note?

No.  National Restaurant Association rules do not allow notes, textbooks, posters, etc. to be in the exam area.

How long is my certification valid?

Your certification is valid for 5 years from the exam date in most jurisdictions.

Do I need to take the class in order to take the exam?

No.  If you have read the book, studied, and feel confident, you can go straight to the exam.  However, you must have a Registered ServSafe Proctor for the exam, and the class is strongly recommended if you have not taken the course before.

Do I need to purchase anything to take the exam?

Yes.  You will need a no. 2 pencil and a ServSafe Exam Answer Sheet.  Please note: Brooks Food Safety does not supply exam answer sheets!  Unless prior arrangement is made, you will be expected to come equipped with your exam answer sheet.

What is the retest policy?

"An examinee may take the examination twice within a thirty day period, if necessary. If a third attempt is required, the examinee must wait at least sixty days from their last attempt."

How do I obtain my certificate?

Upon passing, your certificate will be available on servsafe.com and you can print the PDF.  If you would like a copy printed and mailed to you, login to your ServSafe account and select "Order Certificate;" there is a $10 fee.

What is the format of the exam?

All ServSafe exams are multiple choice.  You may write in the exam booklet; however, all answers must be bubbled in on the answer sheet to receive scoring.

Do I need to purchase the textbook?

No.  However, it is strongly recommended that you get the book and begin reading it before your class.

How long does it take to get my score?

For paper exams, your score should be available no later than 10 business days from your exam date.  For online exams, you will know immediately if you passed/failed, and your specific score should be processed within 3-5 business days.

If I am recertifying, do I need to retake the class?

Up to you!  Some people are good to go, others want to retake the class as well.  It is recommended, however, that you at least refresh yourself by using the textbook or a coaching session.

What is ServSafe Coursebook?

The ServSafe Coursebook "goes beyond the principles found in ServSafe Manager Book and adds greater depth and breadth of food safety practices."  It is the better book for those in need of more extensive food safety training, those in academia, or for reference.

ServSafe Food Handler

Does my Food Handler card expire?

Yes.  The National Restaurant Association and most jurisdictions recognize the Food Handler card for 3 years.  Always check with your local jurisdiction to ensure compliance.

How long is the assessment, and what score do I need to pass?

The assessment is 40 questions and you need 75% correct to pass.

Is the ServSafe Food Handler Guide required for the course?

For all instructor-led classes, yes.

ServSafe Alcohol

How long is my ServSafe Alcohol certification valid?

The National Restaurant Association and most jurisdictions recognize ServSafe Alcohol certifications for 3 years.  Always check with your local jurisdiction to ensure compliance.

How long is the test, and what score do I need to pass?

The ServSafe Alcohol Primary Exam is 40 questions and the minimum passing score is 75%.

The ServSafe Alcohol Advanced Exam is 60 questions and the minimum passing score is 80%.

Do I need to purchase anything for the test?

Yes.  You will need to bring a no. 2 pencil and purchase a ServSafe Alcohol exam answer sheet.  Please note: Brooks Food Safety does not supply exam answer sheets!  Unless prior arrangement is made, you will be expected to come equipped with your ServSafe Alcohol exam answer sheet.

Is Fundamentals of Responsible Alcohol Service required for the class?

Yes.  While the book is not necessary to take the class, the answer sheet is only available in the book (not available separately).

What is the difference between the Primary Exam and the Advanced Exam?  Which one should I take?

"The ServSafe Alcohol Primary Exam tests basic understanding. The ServSafe Alcohol Advanced Proctored Exam tests proficiency in key concepts."  Most jurisdictions will recognize certifications based on the Primary Exam; however, you should check with your local jurisdiction to ensure compliance.  Anyone wishing to apply to become a Certified ServSafe Alcohol Instructor will need to take the Advanced Exam.
